The 300th Anniversary of Bevois Mount
Slam finished painting the second mural in Alma Road in time for the beginning of the year of the anniversary, 2023. Three hundred years before, Charles Mordaunt visited Southampton and laid eyes on the piece of land that was to become his ‘little amoret’. He built his country house on the site of an existing farmhouse. Unfortunately, that did not survive for three hundred years as the last of it was demolished in 1940. The poet, Alexander Pope, would not describe Bevois Mount as ‘beautiful beyond imagination’ today but the estate has remained intact even if it is usually referred to as Inner and Outer Avenue.
