Warner and Dyte Bakers
One Henry Warner is recorded in the 1849 street directory as a baker in Canal Walk. Born in 1826 in Kingston, Portsmouth, he works as a baker and ‘master baker’ till his death at the age of 65 in 1891. He is found in Richmond Street trading as a baker from c. 1851 till he relocates to Alma House ‘baker shop’, Padwell Road, c. 1871.
By 1884 the firm is called Warner and Dyte as he had been joined by Samuel Dyte (b. 1846 in Somerset). Their two families lived in adjacent houses in Padwell Road 28, 30 and 32 incorporating a steam bakery.
Henry Warner died in 1891 but Warner and Dyte continued as a bakers even after Samuel Dyte’s death in 1898. Charlotte Dyte continued the business appearing as ‘baker and confectioner’ in the 1911 census and still trading at the same address with her daughter ‘assisting in business’. Charlotte died in 1913 after which Warner and Dyte Bakers no longer appear in local street directories.
Samuel and Charlotte’s son Harry, though apparently not continuing the bakery, was a baker and continued to live in the Bevois Mount area with his wife their last recorded address being 30, Gordon Avenue c. 1944.
